Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: Month-by-Month Guide
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, which means there is always sunshine somewhere. Here is where to go and when.

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but the weather changes depending on which side of the island you visit. Two monsoons bring rain to different coasts at different times of year, so the trick is to match your route to the season.
December to March: west, south and hill country
This is the peak season. The south-west monsoon has passed, so beaches from Negombo to Mirissa are sunny and calm, and the hill country around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella is at its driest. It is also the best time for whale watching from Mirissa (roughly November to April). Book stays early if you plan to travel at Christmas or New Year.
April: a shoulder month
April is hot and can be humid, with occasional afternoon showers as the inter-monsoon period begins. It is a good month for the Cultural Triangle and for cultural events such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April.
May to September: east coast and Cultural Triangle
While the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas to the west and south coast, the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) enjoys its best weather. The Cultural Triangle is dry, Yala National Park is at its most productive for wildlife, and the elephant “Gathering” at Minneriya usually peaks between July and October.
October and November: inter-monsoon
Expect short, sharp showers, usually in the afternoon. The countryside is lush and crowds are thin, which suits travellers who prefer a quieter trip and lower prices. The north-east monsoon begins in late October or November, bringing rain to the east and north.
