Visa and ETA
Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or visa before arrival. Requirements and fees change from time to time, so always apply through the official Sri Lankan government portal and check the latest rules for your nationality. Our team can guide you if you get stuck.
Money
The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available in towns, and hotels and larger restaurants accept cards, but carry cash for markets, small cafés and tips. Ask your driver or hotel about a fair rate for tuk-tuks and always agree the price first.
Temple etiquette
When visiting temples and religious sites, dress modestly: cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes and hat before entering. Never pose with your back to a Buddha statue, and ask before photographing people.
Getting around
Traffic can be slow and roads winding, so distances that look short on a map may take longer than expected: a 100 km journey often takes three hours or more. Sri Lanka drives on the left. Many visitors choose a private driver so they can rest, look out of the window and stop wherever they like for photos.
