About Kandy

Kandy was the last capital of Sri Lanka’s kings and is still the island’s cultural and religious heart. The city wraps around a peaceful lake in the hills, with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic on its shore.

It sits halfway between the Cultural Triangle and the tea country, so almost every Sri Lanka itinerary passes through. One or two nights is enough to see the highlights before continuing to Nuwara Eliya or Ella.

Best time to visit
Pleasant all year; January to April is usually driest. The Esala Perahera takes place in July or August.
How long to stay
1–2 nights, often combined with Sigiriya before and Nuwara Eliya or Ella after.
Getting there
About 3 hours by private car from Colombo airport.
