Tea estates, waterfalls and cool mountain air
Nuwara Eliya sits high in the central mountains, surrounded by rolling tea estates. Its cool climate, colonial-era bungalows and flower gardens earned it the nickname “Little England”.
This is the place to see how Ceylon tea is grown and made, hike across the Horton Plains plateau and catch the scenic train through the hills. Evenings are chilly, a welcome change from the coast.
Walk through the estates, watch the leaves being withered, rolled and dried, then taste fresh tea with a view.
An early-morning hike of about 9 km across a high plateau to a cliff edge with a sheer drop, plus the pretty Baker’s Falls.
Boating, pony rides and lakeside walks in the centre of town.
A tall waterfall on the road between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, an easy stop on the drive up.
Stroll through the gardens and past the red-brick post office and colonial clubs.
Board one of the world’s most beautiful train rides at nearby Nanu Oya station and continue to Ella.
Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and stops along the way.
